I wish the Dems had proposed limiting asylum immigration rules long ago.

@Bumbles I wish the US government had chosen not to fuck up living conditions in Central and South American countries long ago. Then there'd be fewer people seeking asylum.

@LordShadowfire There was interference but I don’t see the counterfactual here.

@Bumbles What I'm saying is, because we went and made a bunch of banana republics, and otherwise fucked with their way of life, we created the "shithole" countries, as our Republican friends call them, and are responsible in large part for conditions there. That's why so many people want to escape to the US.

@LordShadowfire I think I’d need to understand this history of the US in a particular country to make that conclusion. I’m a little skeptical that without US interference such places would be otherwise healthy vibrant countries, so would need to know more.

@Bumbles Well, let's take Panama for an example. Back in 1989, we invaded them, ostensibly to oust dictator Manuel Noriega (who, by the way, was known to have ties to our intelligence agencies, and most probably was installed by the US in the first place, and then outlived his usefulness), and basically fucked up their infrastructure, offering no attempts at reconstruction whatsoever.

This is all shit you can find at Wikipedia.

@LordShadowfire I don’t really see that pretty minor operation resulting in a wave of immigrants from Panama. The country didn’t decent into chaos. Same with Mexico which has been independent for 150 years. Sorry, hombre, not saying it’s impossible just don’t see the evidence.

For Panama the opposite would seem the case. Under the new democratic government led by Guillermo Endara—who most thought won the nulled 1989 presidential elections—Panama began to improve.
