Good grief! I’d like to hear how this could have been ”negotiated”. Seems to forget that this tactic was tried for 70 years prior.

The North did not particularly want to end slavery; it did not want it to expand into the Western territories. The North would have been ecstatic if all Black people had been deported from America. They wanted an all-White country. The Southerners didn't like Blacks but would have gladly imported all of them from Africa to be their slaves.
