Dictionary.com is wrong.

The word "Führer" goes back to at least mid-19th century Germany as a military title and in Austria in regards to far-right politician and anti-Jewish agitator Georg von Schönerer who, like Hitler later, favored Anschluss with Germany.

Not only did von Schönerer's followers refer to him as "der Führer," but they also used the Roman raised right-handed salute to him.

Von Schönerer had a large influence on a young, aspiring dictator named Adolf Hitler.
