THE U.K GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN TOLD IT'S ASYLUM POLICY OF SENDING REFUGEES TO RWANDA IS ILLEGAL

The UK Supreme Court has ruled the governments policy of sending potential asylum seekers to Rwanda before being considered for leave to stay is illegal.

This idea was brought about by the numbers of people being smuggled into the UK from places in Europe in ridiculous numbers.
But rather than go after the gangs who do the smuggling, a right-wing section of the Conservative party came up with the idea that anyone caught should be flown to Rwanda and await possible processing/rejection there.

Apparently months of negotiation with Rwandan authorities had made this a possibility despite the fact little information about the agreement has been made known to the UK public.

Hard one this- we are a small island, we hardly have unlimited space for everyone.

@BritishFailedAesthetic But it's almost exactly the same argument America makes about it's southern border yet NOBODY EVER does anything PRACTICAL about it !

Britain is a small island nation.
You could move every army base in the country nearer to it's borders !
But they don't !

Instead of 'prison hulks' they were talking about being put into the channel (they were quite prepared to do THAT) they could build a fortification !
Have it permenantly manned and just shoot anyone coming near !
But they don't.
@Picklebobble2 Jeez, I mean I wouldn't shoot anyone.

@BritishFailedAesthetic But if this were really about keeping the country 'safe' from threat' as they're trying to have us believe, you'd have to consider it wouldn't you ?

I wonder, if Britain gained a reputation for sinking boats in the channel they suspected of carrying illegal immigrants......do you think they'd still try ?

Ain't the supreme court and the government the same thing?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@FloorGenAdm No. Government creates policy. judiciary tells them whether or not it's legal.
supersnipe · 61-69, M
A piece of performative nastiness. It sells newspapers and goes down well with some people, but it could never be a solution. A few thousand people a year, maybe?

I just want this era in our history to be over.

@supersnipe when you're looking for power, appeal to the lowest common denominator for support.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
£140million at least spent so far. That's just what was the "down payment" to Rwanda. What a shambles.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@OldBrit Did you know @OldBrit accepting illegal immigrants for detainment is something of a specialty in Rwanda ?

I didn't know that before today.

The problem is Rwanda is also renound for bribery and corruption and 'mysterious disappearances' of some of it's prisoners.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Picklebobble2 precisely why this should never have been considered before you even consider the moral etc aspect.
Little things like law don’t normally get in their way.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@LosSantosNPC so the pitch will be too leave the European Convention on Human Rights and pass a new law making it legal.

Just ponder our standing in the world if we do that.

And if course it'll allow freedoms we take for granted now to be removed eventually
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@OldBrit And if we can do it to other nations people just watch and see what their response to ours is if any of our get caught up in something like this.
@OldBrit I’m not saying I approve. But as a former employee I can confirm they are of the opinion that the law applies to everyone but them.

Why are you SHOUTING?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@RedBaron Because it's possible the government might fall today as a result.
It's important
RedBaron · M
@Picklebobble2 But apparently it hasn’t.

@Camelia . I don't despise anybody !
I made the post to illustrate just how stupidly racist and uncaring and right-wing a section of the UK government is !

The 'answer' for me is to stick a UK warship in the channel and destroy the boats before they get anywhere near the UK.
I mean at least THEN the UK government could be said to be protecting it's territory.

But these people are too stupid to even consider doing that.

@Camelia If you don't consider the idea of some of these people as possibly fleeing inhumane torture or selling into slavery or prostitution or gun running or smuggling or drug mule-ing under threat from gangs/cartels/slave owners/ and worse, you tar everybody with the same brush and that's like being found guilty before you've done something !
Especially since most illegals are working black economy jobs.
Sweatshops; cleaners; nannies; gardeners; farm workers etc.
Not like they're a threat even economically to anyone.
