Israel's row with the UN.

Israel is in the process of banning UN officials after the general secretary's comments.

He condemned Hamas and also said that their actions didn't happen in a vacuum. He also said that Israel had committed war crimes and was inflicting collective punishment on Palestinians.

I have read his comments and I can't see how what he said was wrong. The Israeli government themselves have said that all people in Gaza are responsible for what Hamas did. They are also clearly acting on that assumption and collective punishment is a war crime according the the UN's own rules.

That Palestinians have been existing under military occupation is likewise irrefutable. Is this a sign that movers and shakers of world politics are moving against the actions of the Netanyahu government? I really hope that it is.

What's been interesting to me is that I haven't seen too many standing with them in a black and white way which I think they anticipated. The context is being acknowledged. I think it's a new road for Israel and they'll act in an expected way. It's a highly conservative administration which means "us vs. them" and any backlash is driven by antisemitism. They're playing the expected cards but I'm not sure the "world" is buying it.

@Ynotisay I think that Gutteres is probably saying out loud what a lot of world leaders privately think.

Israel is hitting back hard but - like you say - it's notable that no governments have attacked him or leapt to Israel's defense. In the past, this would have happened.

@Burnley123 Yep. This time is different. The "right" is trying to frame it that any acknowledgement of the plight of Palestinians is tacit support for Hamas. But that's not flying. And I have a feeling that Israeli leadership is waking up to that fact.
