Vivek Ramaswamy declares US high schoolers 'should be required' to pass basic civics test

All immigrants to the U.S. must pass a basic civics test during a naturalization interview in order to become American citizens

Vivek Ramaswamy slams 'laughable' allegation behind 2024 run: 'This is a joke'

2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy joined 'Fox News Sunday' to discuss his candidacy and why he is best equipped to lead the country as President of the United States.

2024 GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy recently declared that all U.S. high schoolers "should be required" to pass the same civics test that immigrants must pass to become U.S. citizens.

The entrepreneur, author, and "America First" GOP candidate proposed his idea to Twitter Friday along with a sample of civics questions from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website that young citizens should know.

Ramaswamy tweeted, "Every high school student should be required to pass the *same* 128-question civics test required of legal immigrants to become citizens. The fact that this is controversial in America is a damning indictment of our Republic’s health.

hell, they can't tell time or write in cursive anymore. good thought but you know, the teachers don't have time to teach those basic things EXCEPT trans sex in the schools....sorry, i just see the irony here

@Corporalcolleague wow...thank you. that took a turn I didnt expect. but thank you again. yes i do believe sex belongs in the home and yes sadly the parents don't do a good job of it

I agree that current educational system is suboptimal but I blame the helicopter parents for the problems. Heavens forbid that their precious little entitled brats are held accountable for performance and civil behaviour. Teachers and administrators are bombarded by parents and the associated lawyers demanding that little Johnny be promoted just for showing up most days.
And now they need to contend with book banners who are trying to shove the dictates of the Southern Baptist hypocrites ( and other pseudo religions) down everyone's throats.

As for cursive it is obsolete. The Guttenberg press was invented to replace cursive but it has taken until now to fully achieve its goal. Common electronic devices have eliminated the need for cursive. Text prevents us from struggling to interpret bad handwriting.

I believe the biological aspects of sex should be taught in high school. The moral aspects should be a parental function. My wife had to listen to too many young women claim they could not be pregnant because they only did it once or he pulled out. The amount of ignorance about sex in our society is staggering.

@jim44444 absolutely agree.

Who is this guy? Another rich twit looking to use campaign funds to increase his wealth?

He is running for President but does not know that education is a state right. The feds, including the President, do not determine graduation requirements.
It seems that all the declared candidates are hell bent on turning our country into an autocratic banana republic.
@jim44444 Given what graduates out of our high schools or enters higher education ( how?) it’s a new course of study…DUMB ASSES 101’
Yes, immigrants should assimilate. But we have a problem with native born Americans who are sadly contributing to the known fact that our educational standing in the world is not perhaps where it could be. And that includes more than simply, civics.
be a whole lot of kids not graduating........ or....... a whole lot of kids actually learning things they should have been taught in the first place.

@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy most kids will rise to whatever bar is set or fail and then be required to keep at it until they meet the standard

I agree.. I would say that 1/2 couldn’t pass that test though.

Where I am most familiar , Economics and Government are 12th grade subjects.
I live in a non union state. The curriculum is handed down by the state and adopted by districts.
The real issues start at home.
If students don’t go to school , then they don’t learn.

It’s not a red or blue issue.

There is a generation of parents who are oblivious.

For once we agree.

@SW-User I learned more about civics from 1) Boy scouts 2) being taken to national parks, museums, battlefields, etc 3) having aware parents that I could ask questions. What I learned in school about civics was supplemental to what I had learned elsewhere. The kids whose parents didn't enrich them were baffled on the some of the most basic topics.

Not a bad idea!
I remember when the school system switched from civics to "social studies." Part of the slow burn to dumb down Americans.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@BizSuitStacy Gee, where did you grow up? For me it was always Social Studies, which civics (or government) was a part of. So "social studies" was American History one year, World history another year, Government/economics another year. You are saying that civics was every year, in addition to history and economics?
@trollslayer
For me it was always Social Studies
That explains your need for extra tin foil

Thought it useful to post a link to sample questions.

I'm always shocked at the general ignorance of the general public, even amongst those with higher education or in elevated positions. While we joke, this isn't a problem with one party - it's a widespread problem. What shocks me is the ignorance to things that I thought nearly everyone knew. Such as "who were our enemies in WWII?"

@trollslayer
While we joke, this isn't a problem with one party -
No one is joking.
It's a problem with the education system - which largely ignores civics.
The fact that educators, union members and academia in general are democrats is simply a point of interest.
It's a huge advantage to the corporate oligarchy that we don't have politics. We don't have civics in middle school or high school any more because it doesn't help people support Capitalism at all. It's not necessary for Americans to know!
Corporalcolleague · 61-69, M
I agree completely
