I'll tell you more, it was the beginning a domino effect. It's the very thing that made them drop the "patriotic" façade, and fully embrace neo-fascism.

@Elessar I think the beginning was even before Obama. It started with Newt Gingrich's strategy of painting the Democrats as pure evil, as opposed to just people with different ideas.

@BohemianBabe It precedes him. Remember that over here all the parties with the exception of the fascist party were dissolved, because Mussolini (or at least his electorate) had a major persecution paranoia too, and were convinced that everyone but him was "bad" and conspiring against him. And then that became a self fulfilling prophecy.

@Elessar I was just referring to America. Of course, Trumpism isn't the first form of Authoritarianism.
Though I think the American Right has been influence by parts of Fascism and Nazism. "Cultural Marxism," which was based on Nazi propaganda, was created in America.
But yeah, if I had to pinpoint the beginning of the road to Trumpism, it would be around that time that Newt Gingrich started to radicalize the GOP. Meanwhile, right-wing media was becoming more insane too, due to people like Rush Limbaugh.
