So,slavery in most of the western world has been gone since at least 1865 if not before. So everyone involved is now dead.So why should i be expected to pay anyone, who might have been a slave, but is now equally dead anyway anything?Makes no reasonable sense. Should the Govt of Norway compensate the UK for the Viking raids in the 8th and 9th centuries?
@wonkywinky And we are just going to pretend something that lasted hundreds of years magically stops impacting the world at a specific date because feelings.
The last racially segregated high school prom in the US was 2008. No that is not a typo.
When was the last time a British farmer had to hire a Norwegian friend to sell their grain or livestock to get fair market price?
Any Norwegian red lining in England?
And that is a bullshit false equivalence.
Tell me without telling me you are not a serious person.
@wonkywinky Should you be compensated for a brain injury cause by incompetence incurred 12 years previous and just discovered? Or are we all good on that?
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow It's in the past. All of the people who participated in this are dead. All we can do now is learn from it. No one alive is responsible for compensating others for things that they never did.
@MsSwan Those who are determined to pretend racism is ancient history usually benefit from the status quo and feel entitled to their privileged position.
And your words are rather amusing because you are demonstrating you refuse to learn from history.
Again systemic problems are not tied to any one person. But pretending it is is a great way to fuck over those who got screwed in this century too.
Your argument amounts to "I got away with it this long so it doesn't count because my feelings say so."
We're talking about monetary compensation for something that happened before I was alive. If anyone should pay, it's the people that are dead, but obviously they can't. That doesn't mean that I should have to compensate anyone just because I'm benefiting from the past. What kind of logic is that?
If I were on the other side of the coin, I wouldn't expect to be compensated, because it's just plain ridiculous to burden those who had nothing to do with it.
@MsSwan Pretending it is ancient history is the crux of your entire argument.
And quite simply getting away with creating massive amounts of wealth by enslaving and then continuing to exploit and entire segment of the population.
By your logic a mafia don is entitled to their millions as long as they were acquired by their predecessor. Because they personally didn't rob someone. lol
And it is cute that you think you are in a position to pretend that people who have been shit on for centuries and you would just accept it with a smile and pretend your oppressor earned it by exploiting you.
Many of the wealthiest people in the US got that way from inherited wealth from that exploitation. Heck Elon Musk was only able to get where he was by being born into a family that amassed mining wealth in Apartheid South Africa on the backs of others.
Your entire attitude screams entitlement. Hate to burst your bubble but you benefit from the status quo which explains your entirely emotional lashing out at the suggestion of redress.
