Who exactly are "they" and why would "they" even want to do that?
I don't like the idea of no cash, but not because I fear some obscure conspiracy theory about implanted chips; though I do not trust the security of putting everything and anything on the Internet.
If anyone was to control that it would not be our own proper and legal "they", but criminals or even malevolent States either for plain theft or for political interference.
Instead, we in the UK at least enjoy a society teeming with all manner of clubs, voluntary activities, charities, etc., etc. that rely on what nationwide must collectively represent a gigantic turn-over of cash in myriad small-value transactions, donations and the like, for which cashless payments are not practical, economical or desirable.
@ArishMell Digital money is on the UK government programme. You can find it on their website. Same for other countries. No question that will be introduced.
@WalterF So it may be and I do know it is being discussed, but we already have it anyway - many people now pay even for minor thinks like a newspaper and bar of chocolate, or a bus fare, digitally; and many of us pay our Council Tax, utility bills and things like club subscriptions by direct-debit or bank-transfer.
So nowt new there.
It is the idea of some unspecified bureaucrat or bank-clerk controlling for some unspecified reason what we spend on what goods or services we choose individually, that I do not take seriously; but I do worry far more about the social effects of no cash at practical levels, as I have explained.
