SMART - the buzzword for the 20s

Are you smart enough to see this for what it is?

ArishMell · 70-79, M
I don't really go along with the idea of "control" but "smart" is a misleading adjective despite the acronym, as these are inanimate objects.

We'd not be able to say whether where we live is supposedly "smart" - whatever that really means and if it ever comes to pass - but we do not have to have the other things.

There is considerable commercial pressure to have the "smart" telephone for the business' convenience, but however we actually use the thing, if at all, is still largely up to us. The less applications you load the less the problem. The less you use it without real need, the less the problem.

Some fear it could be used to track them, because tit transmits homing signals so an incoming call can find it. The system needs know where the instrument, not the user is, to work. Anyway why are you that bothered? Tracked by whom? Why Are you really that important to the Powers-That-Be? I'm not! Up to no good? I'm not.

The telephone system is tracking the 'phone's location not yours, and unless you do things to attract attention that that needs attracting, its operators have no idea why you are there or even if you actually have the 'phone with you. My portable 'phone is only a basic type not linked to the Internet, and I take it with me when I go out only if I might need it, such as for a car breakdown. It spend most of it time at home.

.

"Smart" homes only means domestic appliances you can control remotely. Do you really think they matter to anyone else? Don't buy them then!
'

"Smart Meters"? I have two, one each for gas and electricity both from the same supplier; thinking we were going to have to have them soon anyway. It seems I was wrong there. I'd misunderstood the publicity. Nevertheless it does not worry me and I rarely bother to switch the display unit on. The most common fear is that the suppliers can use it to turn off your supply at whim, but there is no evidence that they might, and they are not allowed to do it however you pay; at least not without due notice. Also, neither of the meters show any indication of being able to do that; and it can only be done within the home.

'
"Smart" cars... I think that simply means electric cars that can respond to sudden incidents and dangerous situations; but might extend to such things as variable speed limits on roads fitted with the appropriate equipment; probably the major motorways if at all.
Worried? Why? It's only a means to go from A to B. for whatever is your reason. Take a train, bus or 'plane and your only control over your journey is where you board and alight.

'

I think the real threats are not from whatever I think you think exist, but from the loss of personal privacy to the few giant US companies that have taken over the Internet, and to criminal activity both from theft gangs and from hostile states (although you and I are probably not of any great significance to the rulers of Russia, China and N. Korea!).

While if you go and buy the one missing from your list, a so-called "smart"-'speaker, there is no hope for you!

I’m sorry but I still use the dumb ones or at least the ones not as smart. I may still set an old fashioned alarm clock to wake me up but I don’t need a computer to tell me to turn on the lights or off. I don’t want a house full of things that think for them selves . If someone wants to break into my house they only have to guess what door or window is not being guarded or boobytraped by old fashioned methods backed up by my shotgun.

I especially never wanted a "smart" meter. It is like having your mother still telling you what to do.

It’s not smart at all.
