Thought for the day

Concentrated power is not rendered harmless by the good intentions of those who create it.
-Milton Friedman
Good intentions? No, more like agendas!
Just look at the very recent remarks by Karl Schwab about being like China. Good intentions, may ass!

So very true. Here in Canada the government decided that healthcare should be a government run enterprise so no one would ever be denied healthcare. Such noble beginnings now has the government encouraging doctors to euthanize their patients rather than engage in costly treatments. A young vet suffering from PTSD induced depression was encouraged to avail himself of Medical Assistance In Dying. IOW medical assisted suicide.

@hippyjoe1955 Central Bank Digital Currency anyone? Trudeau has already used this concept when shutting down bank accounts of the truckers protesting COVID policy.

@irishmolly72 You are correct. Digital currency is a foolish idea. Not long ago the Rogers network went down and banking/electronic payments were severely impacted.
firefall · 61-69, M
Who ever said that it would? Milton Friedman, stating the obvious since 1953

Also, isnt that Leon Trotsky in the photo?
chrisCA · M
@firefall You are correct.
redredred · M
You know that’s Leon Trotsky right?
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@redredred Uh huh. Trotsky had plenty of good intentions and concentrated power along with Lenin early on in the revolution.

Lenin and the Bolsheviks wanted the Communist Party to be led by a small, highly organized group who were loyal to the Party. Trotsky and the Mensheviks wanted the Communist Party to be larger, more inclusive and somewhat less centrally-organized. Trotsky was Lenin's subordinate. Trotsky had to cave. He lost whatever control he had of the machine, which upon the death of Lenin was taken over by Stalin. The rest is history. Why do I mention all this in this context? Many argue that Trotsky's intentions were good. But the road to hell was paved by them.

Milton Friedman is spot on with his quote; it is apt in today's world. The US federal government is possibly the most massive concentration of power that has ever existed, built by so many good intentions!
firefall · 61-69, M
@irishmolly72 The thing is, that quote doesnt mean, Dont concentrate power. It says, Dont concentrate power without counterbalances against abuse. It's potentially possible, but extremely unlikely, that Leon would have come up with some counterbalance, but he never got that chance

Absolutely true.. And that applies to the power of Capital as much as political or Military power. So each must be balanced by an independent LAW, which is inforced...😷
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@irishmolly72 I would like to see progressive Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt again. I'd still probably not like all of their policies, but there's at least something I can respect in them.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@irishmolly72 Now you and I agree. And I would uphold the ideas of Teddy Roosevelt to this day..Sadly the laws that exist are not enforced universally. Power buys you immunity. And while it is most noticable in non western Democracies, America is very present in the group where money and privilege can skirt you around the law. And certainly around justice..😷
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@ViciDraco Throw in Ike and we have a deal. :)
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
When Friedman backed Pinochet he said something different. 🤣
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Burnley123 Except that he didn't back Pinochet. Some of his disciples did.
RuyLopez · 56-60, M
A brilliant man. Love watching the old videos of him.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
Why the quote by Friedman and the picture of Leon Trotsky?
