New UK Prime Minister

It's Rishi Sunak as Penny Mordaunt withdraws.

So one candidate with the benchmark of 100 MPs nominations he's elected unopposed.

... Now how long will he last 🤨
SW-User
I still wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson back, either before or just after the next election. I think he's had a look at the pending inquiry into him, possible lack of support in his party and the general shit show of things, and decided to let someone else take the blame for now.

@SW-User I hope you're right. He has a legacy of lying in everything he's done, but somehow keeps coming back.

@SW-User I'm 100% convinced he didn't have the 100 votes needed to make the ballot. I don't believe his ego would have let him pull out for the sake of anyone, let alone the country?!

On a flippant note, the number of children he has might also be a clue as to his willingness to pull out?

Pretty cool system. The UK has a Prime Minster that no one voted for. That's kind of like Gerald Ford for us.

@Burnley123
I know I don't need to tell you how hard it is for the American legislature to remove an executive.

Yes. Never been done.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest Though it would have happened to Nixon if he hadn't resigned, right?

Though it would have happened to Nixon if he hadn't resigned, right?

No one knows for sure. My guess is that if he had not resigned, the 25th amendment would have been invoked. For the record though, Nixon was never impeached. He had enough decency left to resign, after the articles of impeachment were prepared. For the record also, he would have faced criminal charges, but Ford pardoned him.

Trump was impeached twice.

We've gone from the Clown to the Lettuce to Slippery Sunak.
Christmas?
@LizOwen Boris had the nicest hair, though.
LegendofPeza · 56-60, M
@LizOwen 'Slippery Sunak.'

I would appreciate it if you refer to the Prime Minister with the correct moniker.

i.e. Fishy Rishi

Thankyou.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@LegendofPeza My apologies. I will endeavour to do so in future.

how can he do any worse than whats happened already.
hopefully he stabilizes the piubd and hits the energy companies with a windfall tax
to put against the growing energy bills and economic crisis

maybe he will survive to the end of the present term
but i do see labour growing from all the in party antics and think they will win the next election

what it the usual turn around of a government 12 to 13 years

the Tories are coming close to that
LegendofPeza · 56-60, M
Johnson got 102 apparently (according to Brady) and Mordaunt 90. That's over half the parliamentary party who didn't throw their lot in with Fishy Rishi from the off.

How long will he last ? ....... that's anyone's guess.

@LegendofPeza but Modaunt's 90 was claimed after Boris withdrew so how much double accounting is there? We'll never know as a vote was never forced.
LegendofPeza · 56-60, M
@OldBrit That's why I said I couldn't find any such confirmation for Mordaunt.

Edit: I did just come across this however .....

'Penny Mordaunt came within 10 MPs of making the ballot against Rishi Sunak, with her allies blaming Boris Johnson for spooking Conservative MPs who told her they had no choice but to try and block his return.

Sources in Mordaunt’s campaign team showed evidence that Mordaunt had almost reached the requisite number of endorsements to face Sunak in a run-off, but admitted that support began to drain away in the final hours.'

Joking aside, he will last until the next gen election and possibly (though unlikely) longer than that.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Burnley123 yes I'd expect tory will lose next time and he'll go after that. He's 2 years to hope for some miracle to happen
@Burnley123 He's got to get that far yet... they still have confidence votes at their disposal.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@OldBrit Now they've gone for Sunnak, it's no longer a formality for labour. He's a known internal opponent of both Johnson and Truss so might be able to escape some of the damage to the Tory brand. Might.

The most obvious prediction is to say that there will be some poll recovery but they still lose more narrowly in two years. I don't rate Starmer though and he's untested against a competent opponent.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I was kinda hoping for Penny to win. The later when she was ousted some could say "Oh look, the penny finally dropped" 😬
@Degbeme i hate hunt with a passion

I am so glad Sunak is PM, hopefully Hunt stays as chancellor and Ben Wallace as defence minister.
