I think you're confusing "conservation" with common sense.

I'm an ultra conservative. I believe in common sense.

Conservative: When someone gets shot, I blame the shooter.
Modern Lib: When someone gets shot, I blame the gun manufacturer.

Conservative: I paid my student loan back, because a deal is a deal, and I don't Welch on a deal.
Modern Lib: Why should I have to pay back the money I promised to pay back? Why can't someone else pay it back?

Conservative: I hate pedophiles.
Modern Lib: Stop being a bigot. They are now called "Minor Attracted People."

The point of conservatism is to uphold traditional values, which conservatives have failed to do. They have compromised their beliefs but still call themselves conservatives.
