Sixteen Year-Old Male Escapes From War-Torn Land to U.S. Using "Chain-Migration."

Boy gets to come to U.S. because of older sister already being present. Once given a green card he goes back overseas and return with his sweeheart.

Now what's going to happen when they have kids? Those kids will become U.S. citizens by birth. And their kids will have kids, who will also becomes U.S. citizens by birth.

Elizabeth Christ and Friedrich Trump, Donald Trump's grandparents, both immigrated to America from a part of Germany with a troubled history. Wikimedia Commons

In 1885, when Friedrich immigrated, he joined his sister Katherine, who had immigrated to New York a year earlier. "Chain-migration", which Donald Trump has denounced, is what enabled his family to be here in the first place.

And it worked for so many families. My family came over like that. Most did. There were sponsorships and guardians and affiliations. And it mattered because you weren't simply waiting on other immigrants - in those immigrant populations might be your children or mother or husband. We had ties to our homelands and rallied with each other to find a touchstone.

Fast forward a couple hundred years and it's no longer "Us" and the Old Country. It's "them" and "the ones who would take what I have." We got selfish and parsimonious. We began to feel like someone else's success somehow reduced us instead of bolstering society.

And we ignore it. This history, the hopes, the evolution. Everyone likes taking an exotic jaunt through Chinatown or Koreatown. They get the best selections at an ancient Jewish deli down the street. They pick up trinkets in the Thai corner of the city. But these were enclaves as much of persecution as they were of familiarity.

And now? Now it's every man for himself.
Thank you! Great post!

My grandparents moved here around 1915 so my father was born here in the USA in 1920. A couple of years after his birth Great grandfather told them to come back and so they did and so my father grew up in what is now the Czech republic.

He was unfortunate to have been sent to prison camp in WWII. Yet he eventually escaped to Italy near the end of the war. Yet he managed to come back here back to where he was born in Iowa.

When I first read the entirety 2018 NYT article on Trumps fraudulent business practices (super long very detailed piece) I was floored.. it detailed everything... and he is as dirty as it gets.. then it gets a Pulitzer Prize.. then Trump sues his niece over the revelations, now Trump and family are being sued and its for most of his marbles. With interest and penalties the tax liabilities will be significant enough to strip him of his wealth.
@pdqsailor1 I thought so, too, but Slippery Donnie has gotten out of so many reckonings that I hesitate to rejoice until the judgments start pouring in.

I think a wrongful death class action might form...

@SomeMichGuy remember the line from Trading Places? “Seems to me that the best way to get back at Rich folks is to turn them into poor folks. “. I think the NY AG saw the movie.
@pdqsailor1 Yes! Great line & true.

Do what I say, not what my family did!

There was a lot of hostility toward German immigrants at that time due to the Haymarket bombing. They were viewed as anarchists and anti-American.

His mother, Mary McLeod, also took advantage of chain migration when she came here from Scotland, as her sister was here already.

Actually, many have not. And I, for the most part, don't block them.

Most are not bad people. Sometimes we can even find common ground.

Some may seem hopelessly addicted to the Kool-Aid. Others will get better on their own as the benefits of the Biden presidency basically inoculates them.

Many others are simply badly misguided and need help to get back on track. And what can be more "American" than reaching out to help one in dire need?
