The reason Bush tried to reform immigration law, the reason Obama tried to reform immigration law, is because if a person at the border asks for asylum, they can stay temporarily LEGALLY until their asylum case is decided.

Why do we have such a crazy system? For decades, US immigration law and policy was designed to spit in the eye of Fidel Castro by treating everyone who set foot on Florida as an asylum seeker. This helped earn votes from a swing demographic in a swing state. I agree, we need immigration reform.

Until then, people who request asylum have temporary legal status. What? Trump never told you about that???
