a dumb story. Also seems very unlikely. What was Roosevelt's supposed point?

That's a typical Hooveresque response. Or are you a Coolidge man? Harding?
A friend told FDR after his first inaugural, "If you succeed you'll go down in history as one of the greatest American presidents. But if you fail, you'll live on as one of the worst."
Roosevelt, in all sincerity, replied, "If I fail, I'll be the last (president)."

@beckyromero He had a big ego. And doesn't deserve his favorable reputation. The New Deal set us ona course which has resulted in the "Inflation Reduction Act" and a bloated bureaucracy which spews forth new regulations by the minute. I'm surprised that someone of your exceeding intelligence buys into that.
The father of the "court packing" schemes which just won't die. It ws a good thing he dies before the end of the War. Someo of his advisors were promoting turning Germany into a "pastoral society" without manufacturing.
Just my humble opinion.

And it worked! The Court never again struck down a piece of New Deal legislation once FDR proposed that idea.

@beckyromero A constitutional amendment is necessary to protect the integrity of the Court. An instance where the Founders left a lacuna.

Perhaps modeled on FDR's idea.
Or a minimum age requirement, say 60 or 65.
That way there will be plenty of earlier court decisions to read and writings of a prospective justice.

@beckyromero NOT on FDR's idea.
