How close is USA to civil war?

Serious questions:
Is the US coming close to civil war ?
Canadians; should our government already have a contingency plan and what should that look like ?

I do not think it is close. I certainly do not think another war will be fought to keep the union intact. I can see a "Balkanization" of the U.S. in which states do finally become individual nations.
