How close is USA to civil war?

Serious questions:
Is the US coming close to civil war ?
Canadians; should our government already have a contingency plan and what should that look like ?

From what I've always been told, countries usually don't feel like they're about to have a civil war. It's just high tensions and then all of the sudden, it begins.
