Besides buying a new car, is there anything we can do about these gas prices?

It seems like every week I pay $10 more for gas. When is the price going to stop rising?

For the individual 'we,' there's little we can do. As others have pointed out, we can drive less, but yeah that only goes so far in a country that's connected almost exclusively by big-ass roads and spread out like crazy. For the collective 'we,' there's a ton we could do. For starters, we could repeal the Jones Act to make transporting oil within the US a little cheaper, that'd take the edge off a bit. We could re-enter the JCPOA and normalize relations with Venezuela so we can buy their oil.

We could re-design our cities so that cars take a proverbial backseat to oil-free transport options like bikes, electric trams and electric subways. We could get rid of R1 zoning so that people's workplaces could be more accessible from their homes without the help of the automobile. Further, we could connect the cities to one another with high-speed rail and erect charging ports up and down every highway in the country to kick-start the proliferation of electric cars. But of course, we won't do that because the corporations that run this hellhole country like things the way they are and are scared of change.

edit: if you have a yard, consider planting ground cover instead of grass. that'll save you some gas.
