More Than 20 Million People Watched Jan. 6 Committee Primetime Hearing Live on TV

By A.J. Katz on Jun. 10, 2022 - 11:57 PM

More than 20 million people watched the primetime hearing of the House Select Committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on Thursday, according to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen.

The above figure includes viewing across multiple networks covering the event, but does not include viewership on PBS, C-SPAN, Fox TV stations or on streaming platforms.

ABC was far and away the top-rated network for Jan. 6 primetime hearing coverage, drawing 5.215 million viewers and more than 1.1 million adults 25-54 from 8-10 p.m. ET. NBC averaged nearly 3.7 million viewers while CBS drew nearly 3.5 million.

MSNBC was the most-watched cable network and the second-most-watched network overall, averaging more than 4.3 million total viewers. CNN averaged more adults 25-54 than the cable competition, 747,000. Fox News was the only major network that declined to carry the entirety of the hearing live, instead sticking with regular primetime programming and occasionally showing the hearing in a split-screen. The network averaged 3.5 million viewers and 546,000 adults 25-54 from 8-10 p.m., which is pretty consistent with what the network typically draws on Thursday in that time period. Fox News drew a larger total audience than CNN, but fewer adults 25-54 than CNN and MSNBC.

Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum covered the hearings live on Fox Business Network. Their coverage attracted 223,000 viewers – roughly double the audience for a typical FBN program, but a significantly smaller audience than what the respective hosts draw on Fox News. Other Nielsen-measured cable networks that carried the primetime hearing live were CNBC, Newsmax, CNNe, NewsNation and NBC LX. Those networks (plus FBN) totaled roughly 600,000 total viewers.

Led by chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D), and vice chairman Liz Cheney (R), the 20 million-plus who watched the proceedings in real time saw 10 minutes of video footage showing rioters destroying Capitol building property. They also saw testimony from two witnesses, a documentarian and a police officer, who describe their intense experiences from that day.

Here’s broadcast and cable network Nielsen live-plus-same-day ratings breakdown:

lackluster viewership.

@SW-User Just by way of explaining the prior comment, what was "edited" was the committee in that the House Minority Leader was unable to select members. This was reportedly unprecedented in Congressional history.

@laotzu92 You mean that none of the Republican House members were willing to testify against Trump? That doesn't surprise me.

@SW-User That was not at all what I said. I did not want to get into a dispute on Jan. 6th.
I simply said, "that the House Minority Leader was unable to select members [for the committee]. This was reportedly unprecedented in Congressional history."

Yeah, but it was on every channel except FOX. If your TV was on it was tuned to that crap.🤣
