@helenS Thankfully, you were around good people! I've been here my whole life and I'm seeing less and less kindness. And I'm blonde and green eyed.
Do you remember the 'HitchBOT'? That robot traveled to many countries, then got beheaded 300 miles into the US. I think it was in 2015, It feels like what happened to it was a harbinger of things to come.

I have to admit I was young and white and female though.
At least you recognize that dynamic makes a difference. A lot of people are clueless about it.

@bijouxbroussard Not sure if they would have been that friendly and helpful, if I had been a middle-aged guy with an Arabic background.
Oh, and I don't know what "at least" could mean, in this context.

@helenS Or even if you’d been an American-born black person. They might’ve still been friendly but perhaps not.
Many white visitors to our country describe being treated kindly, but don’t add that qualifier. Doesn’t change the reality, but it indicates an awareness that not everyone possesses.

@bijouxbroussard I cannot imagine being an American-born black person. It escapes me. It is totally foreign. I do not know what it means. I do not know what it feels like.

@helenS No, there’s no way you would know. And there’s not really a monolithic experience nowadays, but because racism is still a factor here, there’s always a possibility of it effecting one’s life, even down to basics like different treatment by law enforcement, financial institutions and healthcare providers.

@bijouxbroussard We should swap bodies for a week.

@helenS I’ve always wondered what it would be like to not have that being possibly part of the equation in everyday life.

Looking at you guys from the outside I think it's about time for you to reinvent America. You're stuck in a cul-de-sac. You see your children die and there's nothing you can do.
It's like a house with a cracked foundation. Not much you can do but tear it down and rebuild.
