Moscow has funded Le Pen and I('m sure you know) at least tried to make huge donations to Liga.
It's not just Putin trying to buy influence (though it is that), it's about ideological commonality. Rightwing, reactionary ethno-nationalsts who seek to remake European liberal democracy in their own image.
Tbh I think the links between Trump and Putin are a bit overblown. Trump would have moved hard against Russia too because of American geo-political interests. The ideological link does however, exist there too.

@Burnley123 Well yes, but at the end of the day an effective alliance or a convenience alliance is still an alliance. Clearly, the League (and other alt-right parties) seem to have an active interest in Russia coming out of this mess they've gotten themselves in alive.
I'm not sure about Trump but seeing how he handled the last global crisis I'm just glad he's sitting at mar-a-lago whining about "election fraud", than in the global office taking critical decisions.
I'm not entirely sure he's moved by American political interests either after seeing him actively try to hamper the containment of an (at the time) unknown pathogen actively spreading among the population of said country, with potentially unpredictable consequences. How would that be compatible with any country's own political interest? Unless it was a case of "let's try to go for herd immunity", a la Boris, gone really bad and unnecessarily for long, at most.
