OK.. Its long been known that is some cases, religious belief can be brought on by a brain injury or tumour. But thats doesnt mean all belief is caused by that. At the heart of religious belief is the psychological need to believe that there is a greater power than us. This is thought to be a residual from our relience on our parents as having control, providing and protecting us.
So one could postulate the faith is just a failure to grow up..馃樂
@whowasthatmaskedman There's a big difference between religious belief and religious extremism, though.

@LordShadowfire I disagree.. Its only a matter of degree. The big difference is between faith and atheism. Degrees of faith define how much god is supposed to do for us. And how much he/she wants in return. I wont disparage anyones beliefs in this case. But can it really impress a god that we sing at him?馃樂

@whowasthatmaskedman that great psychological need... What causes that?

@Tastyfrzz Basically childhood. In an ideal world we are loved, protected and our needs magically carered for. So the presence of a provider and protector is a comfort. And often we learn at our parents knee the attitudes to god and worship. The stronger those attitudes, the deeper they tend to define who we will become. A faith that visibly sets one apart, like orthodox Jew or Amish all defines the community we interact with . Unless an event arrives to shift us from that path, we tend not to leave.馃樂
