I honestly cannot see why any Americans would be patriotic

That's part of the picture, but it's not the whole picture. There is also much good.
No country has clean hands. All countries have at one time or another been guilty of war, oppression, injustice, slavery, colonialism. We can't change the past. But we can try to be better than our ancestors.
