Is it illegal to be a predatory lender?

Last year, against the advice of his entire family, my dad took out a new loan on a rental property we own, since the tenant wasn't paying her rent (presumably because all landlords are scumbag pieces of ѕhit and we deserve to die, which seems to be the prevailing opinion among people who are better than me).

The company he went through is called Veristone, and they offered him a deal that just sounded too good to be true. He took it, of course, because deals like that are designed to separate people like him from their money.

Veristone, as it turns out, made entirely too many of those super good deals, and is now in desperate need of money. So naturally, they've decided to foreclose on as many family-owned companies as they can to get their money back, because that's all that matters to these people. The properties my dad borrowed against are going up for auction next month.

There is a maximum amount a company can charge in interest fees, and that varies on a state by state level.

However, when considering that every single credit card company is capable of charging 28%+ in every state. that right there is predatory lending.

@LordShadowfire It's' whatever the contract says. Your state's attorney general's office can give a definitive answer.
