Put Putin on trial.

In light of the recent atrocities and the apparent inability , or reluctance , of the UN to take meaningful action against Russia , there are growing calls for an international tribunal to try Putin for the crime of aggression. (Something the ICC cannot try him for without a Security Council referral , which Russia would obviously veto.)

Their aim is to try and recreate something like the Nuremberg Trials. Not sure if this is a starter or not , but there is a petition which has been launched to try and give it legs.

Remind me again... how many weapons of mass destruction were found in Afghanistan???

It's not like the west doesn't have blood on its own hands here - when do we try those who were responsible for that war, too???

@HootyTheNightOwl What does that have to do with Putin and co.?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@HootyTheNightOwl Never mind the tu quoque fallacy... putin is the war criminal, and he must answer for the actions of the russian barbarians

The eyes of the entire world are fixed on the atrocities committed by the russian thugs and the russian gangster régime
@ninalanyon Simply put... how do you judge that he has Ukrainian blood on his hands when you have Afghani blood on yours???

Do I want to see Putin go down for what he's done??? Absolutely - but, at the same time, there's no one country that doesn't have the blood of others on their hands to judge him.

@HootyTheNightOwl So a failure in our collective past forbids us from doing the right thing in the future?
@ninalanyon No... we still have a chance to correct our wrongs - but it means looking at our past actions and trying others who are also just as guilty as Putin.

The question is:- How many will do that???

@HootyTheNightOwl Do you understand what a tu quoque fallacy is?

It’s sometimes called ‘whataboutism’

It has no relevance for any point under discussion... it’s merely a desperate ploy to direct attention away from what is being discussed.

It won’t work. The eyes of the entire world are fixed on the atrocities committed by the russian thugs and the russian gangster régime, and russia has earned the world’s contempt

Иди на хуй, россия

@HootyTheNightOwl I think Tony Blair and George W Bush should also be on trial in the Hague. I said also, because both things are true.

@newjaninev2 Do you understand that my above post was a (polite) criticism of Hootie for missing the point?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Burnley123 Oops... blue on blue (as my friend says) 😀
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@newjaninev2 Unusually for me, I haven't done a long political post in a while and I want to deal with this so I'll probably do one today.

In one sense, I do agree with Hootie insofar as not enough attention is devoted to western war crimes. For example, our media is not really covering attrocities in Yemen and there are reasons for this.

None of that invalidates ANY criticism of Putin. All of that is entirely valid and correct. The point (for me) is to unashamedly go after Putin, whilst still being aware of the wrongs committed by Western powers. It's not either/or. It's both.
@Burnley123 Exactly!!! How can you point your finger at Putin and say "You're wrong" - when you can't hold your own hands up and take accountability for the wrongs that you did???

Yes, Putin is wrong - but we still have blood on our hands, too.

@HootyTheNightOwl
How can you point your finger at Putin and say "You're wrong" - when you can't hold your own hands up and take accountability for the wrongs that you did???
Quite easily. The two things are quite separate. Each can be dealt with separately.
@ninalanyon Then, why hasn't this happened???

Oh, yeah, because we're too busy telling the guy next door that his cess pit stinks...
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@HootyTheNightOwl Well, firstly I didn't personally do any of the things you seem to be accusing us all of doing, And secondly I argued against a lot of the things and people you mention at the time they were doing them. I'm not entirely sure what you are trying to achieve by continually repeatedly restating the obvious and acknowledged facts of the failings of Western leaders.
You seem to be arguing that because we are less than perfect that we cannot expect any improvement from anyone. Is it meant to be some kind of analogue of Christ's injunction "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"? Perhaps you could explain how your way of doing things will result in a better outcome for the world than the way being argued for by almost everyone else here.
