Is anyone else completely floored by the fact that Switzerland broke its neutrality or is it just me?

BlueVeins · 22-25
It's really crazy that it's gotten this far, but it's important to remember that Switzerland's so-called neutrality is largely a sham to cover up the fact that it served as a safe haven for Nazi banks in World War 2 and stored wealth that was stolen from victims of the Holocaust.

@BlueVeins Perhaps we've misunderstood each other. I agree that we should not whitewash past crimes. But, there has to come a time when we focus on the present and try to do things which are commensurate with a positive future.

I've no idea what Switzerland will do moving forward. But we do know what Japan has done and we know what Germany has done since WW2.

As for the US................🤦‍♂️

@room101 I only brought it up because it was directly relevant to the original post. I agree that it would be foolish to blabber about that for, say, a head of state or ambassador who actually has to be cautious about alienating the wrong people.

Relating to Germany, I have seen that they're re-militarizing, which is great since they're on our side now. We need a strong Germany to counter Russia, so the US can focus its energy on countering the PRC.

@BlueVeins Switzerland has the oldest policy of military neutrality in the world; its neutrality was established by the Treaty of Paris in 1815, well before WWII.

Most countries declare themselves neutral because they have neither the military to assist nor the resources to support.

I am impressed, one side advantage to all this is China has to be thinking about what would happen to their economic situation should they invade Taiwan. Their financial ties are much more involved internationally and what is happening to Russia on the sanctions front has to give them pause if they think about it.

It is interesting, certainly. Once again, these are world changing events, and despite the horror in Ukraine I think something good will ultimately come of all this, whatever it may be.

This might be Putin's greatest achievement; uniting Europe, and forcing countries like Germany and Switzerland to u-turn on decades old principles like neutrality and pacifism.
SW-User
@SW-User I guess you could call this a World War now, except it's essentially the world against Russia.
SW-User
@SW-User Exactly! Whatever happens next, Putin's legacy will be that of a cowardly megalomaniac, outclassed by the likes of Zelenskyy and Scholz.
Forgetmeknot · 41-45
@SW-User China is looking like it might make moves on Taiwan so it could be a world war.
wackidywack · 22-25
I am ASTOUNDED. You have to know you fucked up after that, you've got to know that it wasn't a good move cause a nation that's been neutral for decades and decades (literally before you were even born) breaks its neutrality because it doesn't support your actions
Graylight · 51-55, F
I applaud Switzerland.
That's a historic event indeed and it shows the gravity of the situation.
Forgetmeknot · 41-45
Not really. For some reason to me it feels inevitable in this situation and unsurprising.

Maybe it's because Switzerland always had its power because it was a money central. They remained safe by being where everyone kept their money. Now because of crypto currency they can not effectively be safe due to being a world safe so they had to pick a side, quick, or risk being forgotten and invaded by Russia if the worst comes to the worst.
