Remember When They Denied That Death Panels Existed?

University of Colorado Hospital System Denies Woman’s Life-Saving Kidney Transplant; Will No Longer Provide Organ Transplants to Unvaccinated

One of Colorado’s largest hospital systems has implemented a new policy that denies organ transplants to patients who have not taken the experimental Covid-19 vaccine under “almost all situations.”

All organ donors will also have to be vaccinated under the new policy, and it has already stopped one woman from receiving the life-saving treatment she needs.

Last month, the University of Colorado Health sent a letter to Leilani Lutali informing her that her status on the waiting list for a kidney transplant was “inactivated” for “non-compliance” because she has chosen not to take the jab. She was given 30 days to take the shot, or else she would be removed from the transplant list completely.

Lutali, who has stage 5 renal failure, was told by the hospital in August that she wouldn’t need to be vaccinated to get her new kidney and was only made aware of the hospital’s new segregation policy when she received her letter in the mail – and only AFTER she was able to find a donor she knew who was willing to give her a kidney.

CBS4 Denver spoke with Lutali about the hospital’s policy and their reasoning behind foregoing the rushed vaccine, which she says has “too many unknowns.”

“I said I’ll sign a medical waiver. I have to sign a waiver anyway for the transplant itself, releasing them from anything that could possibly go wrong.

It’s surgery, it’s invasive. I sign a waiver for my life. I’m not sure why I can’t sign a waiver for the Covid shot.”

They also spoke with her donor – Jaimee Fougner – who was outraged that the hospital could decide not to operate when there is a kidney available that will save her friend’s life.

Like Lutali, Fougner is also not vaccinated.

“It’s your choice on what treatment you have. In Leilani’s case, the choice has been taken from her. Her life has now been held hostage because of this mandate.

This is a non-story and nothing to do with the mandate.

Being vaccinated has always been a requirement before certain surgeries, way before Covid 19. MMR, Diphtheria, Hepatitis, Influenza - it's super common.

You're way more vulnerable to disease and viral infection during a surgery, especially a transplant. Your body becomes stressed and the immune response is supressed during an operation, hence the need for extra defence via vaccination.

They probably asked this woman not to drink or smoke either - this isn't a trespass upon her freedoms, it's basic medical practice.

If she's not willing to get the vaccine, fine. But the hospital are well within their rights to offer transplants to patients who are willing to take all necessary precautions to maximise their chances of a successful operation.

It Clearly IS a story - it's right here - you even commented on it.
[Do you have covid or something?]

@Budwick unless you want to be called out for being a consistently spineless idiot, you really should block me again.

@Budwick Not sure why you'd delete my response, but here it is again.

Of course it's a non-story.

"Woman who refuses basic medical standards is refused surgery". In other news, the sky is blue and water is wet.

The hospital only have 1 kidney to transplant - are they going to give it to A) a person willing to do everything to make that surgery a success or B) a person refusing to fulfil the most basic medical requirements.

This isn't even an American thing. Regardless of where this woman lived, she would be required to vaccinate prior to surgery. Same in the Europe, or Canada or Australia etc.

@SW-User That's an awful lot of information for a nonstory!
SW-User
@Budwick Yep - unfortunately it takes a lot more detail to counter misinformation than it does to spread that misinformation in the first place.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@SW-User Which detail is incorrect?
SW-User
@Budwick The foundational premise; that it's a new policy to require vaccinations prior to surgery. This isn't new. Vaccines have for decades been required prior to surgery, because your immune system is highly compromised during the procedure and thus susceptible to infection.

So the idea that it's newsworthy that you'd be required to get a Covid vaccine before surgery... well yeah, duh. If you want to maximize the chance of success, you have to meet certain health measures.

@SW-User The foundational premise is that
One of Colorado’s largest hospital systems has implemented a new policy that denies organ transplants to patients who have not taken the experimental Covid-19 vaccine under “almost all situations.”

It IS new.
Last month they didn't do that.
SW-User
@Budwick Nope. It's not new. As confirmed by the hospital itself, there has always been a vaccine policy in place, and now Covid has been added to the long list of vaccines you'd be required to have prior to surgery. Naturally, being that it's more contagious and more deadly than Influenza or SARS.

Also, no reputable source would call the Covid vaccine "experimental". It's about the most well researched and developed vaccine we've ever had, and it's saving lives.

The only people who have a problem with the decision of this hospital are anti-vax proponents who don't understand basic medical practices.

@SW-User
Nope. It's not new...... Covid has been added to the long list of vaccines
A bit of a conflict there, Ordinary.
SW-User
@Budwick There really
isn't. The claim was that the policy was new. It's not, as confirmed by the hospital. They're of course going to update that policy as and when new deadly viruses emerge.

It's not surprising then that people are told pre-op that all vaccines need to be up to date, including Covid.

@SW-User You were wrong.
You ARE wrong.
You are always wrong!

That is the space cadet motto!
SW-User
@Budwick I think you're off your rocker, but I respect the Spaceballs reference.
