I understand that many of the members of the EU are chronically short of HGV drivers as a consequence of Covid too. Nobody saw that coming, did they? #justsayin'

@ArtieKat The UK government and its supporters point the fingers, not surprisingly, but unconvincingly, away from themselves and Brexit.
They point out to other, and in particular the EU and even Germany as having the same problems.
Germany may well have a shortage, but it also has resources. There are 1.5m drivers working in Germany. A shortage of absolute numbers anywhere near that in UK, is of course much less felt (shortage of even 100k having 1.5m is not the same as shortage of 100k when you only have 236k).
Covid of course affected recruitment, but this is not unique to the UK. What is unique to the UK now is that you have to draw on resources and solve problems on your own, rather than as part of the richest bloc on earth.

@helenS If it's any consolation the same sort of thing happened when (smallpox?) vaccines were first around in the 19th century. 'Leave it to Divine Providence' etc, etc. Trouble was, 'divine providence' was having a kip at the time and a few thousand more people died.
