Is it the high school degree so many have?
Is it enjoying a day a a park or getting there by public transit?

Because I thought every single one of those things were everyday examples of socialist concepts in action.

Seems to me you're an outlier. Someone offered you education to invest in yourself and look what happened there; safety nets exists because life is unpredictable but human nature is not.
