Why do Republicans want to spend $1 trillion fighting in Afghanistan but not hiring American workers to do infrastructure projects here in the US?
MickRogers · 26-30, M
@Harmonium1923 Because Afghanistan is having a legitimate insurrection done against them, maybe.
We never should have left.
We never should have left.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@MickRogers You mean because we had so much success in the first 20 years we were there? Or because the soldiers we trained were so committed to their cause?
MickRogers · 26-30, M
@Harmonium1923 Are you honestly totally fine with a state in the Middle East being the exact image of Saudi Arabia, if not worse?
Because that's what the Afghanistan insurrection will lead to. Anyone is an idiot to think that won't happen.

@MickRogers I think the last twenty years under a combination of presidents and Congresses from both parties demonstrated we have no will or ability to change things there. It’s time to get out. It might be the only thing Trump and Biden agrees on.

@MickRogers Saudi Arabia is a western ally. I agree, its laws are awful but nobody is suggesting invading it.
I think the war on terror has actually strengthened Islamic fundamentalism. It creates martyrs and gives people extra reasons to hate.

Not just Republicans, that was across party lines.

@Burnley123 Violence begets violence. Current recriminations for past recriminations only setup future recriminations.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@SumKindaMunster you gotta read the full sentence. The Republicans were the ones opposing the infrastructure bill.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@Harmonium1923 lets see how you feel after the next major terrorist attack, preach to us how we shouldn't be over there when your family & friends are among the victims...
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Harmonium1923 I read the full sentence, I just didn't think the 2nd part was relevant.
You could also say Democrats want to spend 1 trillion in Afghanistan, but don't care that Covid infected illegal immigrants are coming over the Mexico border.
Endless war is not a partisan thing, both parties support these wars.

@SumKindaMunster not following your example. I was comparing the value of different expenditures.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Harmonium1923 Ok. Does this make more sense to you?
Democrats want to spend 1 trillion in Afghanistan, but don't want to spend the money to secure our southern border and prevent Covid infected illegal immigrants from coming over the border.

@SumKindaMunster. I was referring to a specific $1 trillion piece of infrastructure legislation opposed by a large majority of Republicans. That’s a clear fact. You’re just offering opinions about what Democrats may or may not feel.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Harmonium1923 So because I have not identified a specific piece of legislation in my counter example, that makes my whole point irrelevant?
Is that your claim?
Is that your claim?
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@SumKindaMunster Never mind, man. I gotta get back to my day job. Cheers.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Harmonium1923 Uh huh, toodles! 👋

@MickRogers Unlike Saudis Taliban is inward-looking - also we could spend twenty more years in Afghanistan and absolutely nothing would change. We should have left sooner - better yet, we should have never gone in.
Taliban is not exactly an insurrection. Frankly, they have more claim to being the legitimate government of Afghanistan than the one we put in place. They’re stone-age douchebags, but at least they’re locals.

@QuixoticSoul The Saudis are outward looking, only because they need people to buy their oil. Also bombing Yemen is outward looking, I guess.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Burnley123 Saudi radicals often tend to embrace the whole Wahhabi pan-Arab caliphate thing. Taliban is decidedly not that.
