While I follow political news, more and more it seems some people on the left and right treat politics as a quasi-religious crusade.

No. Public schools are designed to be a kind of religion. It teaches you not to question or challenge the government who bestows on you your "free, universal, yet compulsory education.
The colleges, and to a large extent, media, are like a choice of two monasteries that teache how to become a crusaders squire or an inquisitors apprentice.
