Twenty years ago a mission that took two years was embarked upon. Considering Bin Laden was in Pakistan we could even question that two years run was needed. What certainly wasnt needed was to shuffle the deck on the entire society which in the process, for better or worse, was disrupted, 😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Hadn't the Soviet Union already taken care of that?

@MarmeeMarch That doesnt matter. They found him in Pakistan. No need to be in Afghanistan for that.😷

I bet the French wish they had stayed in Germany a few extra years.

@beckyromero After which war?😷 But the French did make the template for losing wars like this in indo China/Vietnam. It doesnt seem like anyone learned much since

After which war?

"This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years."

Marshal Ferdinand Foch, on the Treaty of Versailles.

@beckyromero I agree with him. But the harsh terms imposed by the French (and opposed by Woodrow Wilson) were a major factor in the rise of the Third Reich... But off the point..😷

Foch actually felt the Treaty was too lenient on Germany. I agree on that point.

@beckyromero I disagree. Not about the leniency per se.. But leaving a wounded lion on your doorstep is never a good idea, while the means to devastate an entire nation the way it was done to Germany and Japan 30 years later did not then exist. You either bury the hatchet, or bury the nation permanently.😷

It didn't have to be about devastating Germany.

Marshal Foch’s oft-cited quote about the treaty being only “a 20 year armistice” is flagrantly misleading when presented out of context, as it often is. Foch was not criticizing the treaty as being too hard on Germany but was actually making the opposite point – that it was not punitive enough. He was lamenting that the treaty did not ensure that Germany’s armed forces and strategic position were permanently weakened, principally through perpetual French occupation of the Rhineland.

In fact, some aspects of the Treaty weren't even enforced!

And then later? Allowing Germany to rebuild it's navy? Especially submarines?

Training a military force in excess of what was allowed in the treaty?

I could go on, but I'm sure you know.
