I’m still not sure what exactly people expected Biden to do - reinvade?

That will depend largely on what the Taliban does.

@MarmeeMarch He inherited this whole situation, from the agreement to leave, to starting his presidency with only 2500 military personnel in-country. The sort of things people are saying he should have done would have required another full-scale invasion.

@beckyromero Yes, that’s the threat - and is why our jets are buzzing Kabul day and night now. So far so good.

It's much easier to stop building a wall that Mexico is paying for than to send tens of thousand of U.S. troops halfway across the world into a landlocked country surrounded by countries not very friendly towards us.
He also inherited the border wall and a stack of bills Trump put together - and had no problem ignoring them.

🤔
You should really study what Julius Caesar did at Alesia.
That's why fence builders build fences and the military - militarises

@MarmeeMarch We will invade if we absolutely have to. As long as the Taliban is letting us evacuate Americans without violence, we won’t.

@MarmeeMarch Honestly, no, no they don’t - it’s how they outlasted us despite horrific casualties. But they understand quite keenly is that they have a sure and fast path to total victory - as long as we leave. And the easiest way to achieve that is to let us herd our people on the planes so we could gtfo.

@QuixoticSoul He may have to.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@MarmeeMarch We play by the rules of "attempting an invasion and an urban battle for Kabul would be extremely counterproductive and is more likely to get Americans still there killed".
@thedarkside Probably not, Taliban has a lot invested in us simply leaving.

@MarmeeMarch I guess so. I question the sanity and intelligence of anyone still in Kabul, especially as it became obvious the Taliban are about to roll in some time ago.

Private contractors help reduce the military footprint.
I'm not so sure it's the best way to approach things.
The Americans from these private companies - engineering for one - should have known that is not a place without some risk.

Yes, private investment has occurred in Afghanistan. And some people brought the families. Or married Afghans and therefore have family there, too.
Also keep in mind that many contractors are private security forces. Something the MPs would have done during the post-World War II occupations of the defeated Acis powers.
Westerners and our Afghan allies are scattered throughout the country, not just in Kabul.

@beckyromero Considering the very public timeline of our pullout, anyone who is still scattered throughout the country was going to take their chances on the civil war.
