The Attire Of Female Athletes

I am glad to see female athletes rebelling against sexist standards in athletic attire.

There is nothing particularly political in my use of the word "sexist". Men being allowed to play volleyball in shorts, while women being required to wear bikini bottoms. Then when they wear shorts like the men-- being fined.

Athletes are professionals. They can decide what attire is best for them. Athletic guilds should focus on broad standards that don't afford undue distraction or performance advantages.

now all we need is male players being allowed to wear speedos. 馃槍 Forcing athletes to wear certain types of clothing is dumb & counterproductive, they're there to do sports lol

@BlueVeins they have a reason to be uniform however, it disallows claims of the other team winning because they wore better clothes or something. I could cry foul at my team because one of them wore something different from the rest of us and under performed because of it. When everyone wears the same thing you reduce the variables.

@Jackaloftheazuresand the obvious response is to tell the sore loser to wear better clothes then

@BlueVeins how does that work for the teammate situation?

It would be just as simple to tell those that don't want a uniform that they aren't being forced to compete in that league
BlueVeins22-25
@Jackaloftheazuresand If your teammate is hurting performance on your team, then they should work it out amongst themselves like adults. Honestly I doubt the performance edge is all that great anyway, but people should be smart enough to know when to make sacrifices for success and when not to.

@RabbitWithWine that's kinda an authoritarian thing too bc you're forcing women to cover up their bodies. It also just sucks for them bc they often have to compete in hot and muggy conditions, where wearing formal attire just isn't comfortable.

@RabbitWithWine right but what he's saying is that if you give people choices, there'll invariably be different ppl wearing different uniforms within a team unless those choices are always unanimous somehow.

@RabbitWithWine Right so what do you do if one of them disagrees with that choice?

@RabbitWithWine So they'd be forced to wear a bikini bottom or heavy uniform instead of being allowed to choose.

@RabbitWithWine Yeah, I'm saying that that's dumb. If someone can perform well in a damn hoop skirt, they should be allowed to wear it on the field. It's not affecting anyone else, so it should be considered a personal choice.

Really this all solved by realizing the right of people to form groups with rules at the same time as realizing the right of the individual's dress choice. So long as they don't get you to step into the recruitment office the way the military does there shouldn't be an issue. And if the individual doesn't compel the group to change their rules for them there's no issue there.

@RabbitWithWine If the professionals knew what they were doing and WEREN'T awful, we wouldn't be having to have this conversation in the first place. Sports leagues will exploit their athletes as much as they can for a quick buck. Fuck, Olympic athletes don't even get paid at all.

Also, that's an Appeal to Tradition; you could use the same argument to say that women shouldn't be allowed to compete in sports at all lol, there was a time when that was the norm, too.

@RabbitWithWine Right but only more comfortable clothing by one particular conception of what that means, and if you find another type of clothing more comfortable, you're kicked off. So progressive. 馃檮

@RabbitWithWine You keep flipping positions. Earlier, you said women should be forced to wear whatever uniform their team decides on and now you're saying they should have a choice. It's impossible to have a conversation with you when you won't be consistant.

@RabbitWithWine "Customary" is a bullshit excuse; everything from foot-binding to marital rape was once customary somewhere down the line. "Teams" making personal choices for their members is just a euphamism for the majority oppressing the minority (if teams are even run democratically which idk). If you really gave a fuck about what's customary, we wouldn't be having this conversation bc you would just blindly agree with the "bikini bottoms only" rule like a lemming, so how 'bout you stop pretending.

@RabbitWithWine It's two different opinions on the same issue. I'm saying that individuals shouldn't be forced to wear clothing they're not comfortable with. You're saying that teams should be allowed to force individuals to wear clothing they're not comfortable with. I agree that teams having choice independent from the league, but that doesn't go anywhere near far enough.
