Is it possible to have a civil discussion on things like politics or religion?

If the majority of the posters have similar views and opinions, then everything is cool. But if the views and opinions clash, then...BOOM!

One can have intelligent discussions about different religions, and political ideologies with like minded people, say in a classroom.
The problem arises when you talk with zealots who believe their way is the only way.
