Veganism has the unassailable moral high ground. Change my mind.

Among populations where eating meat and animal products in not made necessary by economic conditions, vegans are morally correct that animal suffering trumps your enjoyment of animal products.

Do you own a pet?
@Pinkstarburst

I take care of a pet. I don't consider myself her owner.
@Pikachu A dog or a cat?
@Pinkstarburst

A sweet kitty
@Pikachu So sweet. The reason I ask is that meat is an essential part of a dog and cat’s diet. It can affect their health without it. Since these are domestic pets, is it immoral to purchase food that contains meat for this reason? If it is, we are being cruel to animals that we have made companions. If it isn’t, we are accepting the slaughter of animals to provide food for them.
@Pinkstarburst

I'm glad you brought that up.
I do only apply this moral argument to humans because only humans have the ability to conceptualize suffering as a bad thing and the means to choose alternative.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They need meat to survive and i think it does count as animal abuse to deny them what they need because of a human moral standard.
@Pikachu So justifiable animal slaughter is acceptable. And there’s no morality in judgement of the people who slaughter the animals for this specific food? Only human consumption?
@Pinkstarburst

For animals that need to eat other animals, i don't see a way around it.
If there's no way around it then i can't see it as morally reprehensible.

I mean we could get robots to do it but that doesn't really change what's being done lol. So no, i wouldn't be passing judgement on the people who process animals for this purpose. (provided they're not enjoying it on the basis that they are killing animals, obviously)
@Pikachu Gotcha. Are you aware that when animals are processed for consumption, the entire animal is used? Animal food is actually made from both meat and by-products of the animal that is slaughtered. This means, both human and pets, and human-kept animals are fed from the same animal.
@Pinkstarburst

Yes i'm aware of that.
But if we're just using the whole animal to feed the carnivores then we need to slaughter fewer animals overall.
I understand your perspective but cannot agree with it being a universal morality issue. I’ve enjoyed our discussion though. Thanks!!
@Pinkstarburst

Me too🙂✌️
