They've said themselves that they cannot win otherwise.
In the very narrow minds of the right leaning citizenry, that works. If democrats win, they must have cheated and are illegitimate. If Republicans win, they can claim that there are more conservatives than liberals, and the nation must bend to the will of "the anointed one". They seem to be okay with demagoguery.
The "Republicans" on the hill care about nothing more than lining their and their donors pockets.
The cult are simply tools to get there.
