And can we talk about the hidden costs of being a landlord? Landlords are painted as being greedy and lazy, but there's plumbing and other maintenance. Plus there are mortgages to pay off, because half your tenants aren't making enough money to cover all their bills, and they decided Visa and Mastercard rate higher than the guy putting a literal roof over their heads. Can't go to the bank and say that, because they don't care, but when you evict a non-paying tenant for one with a better credit and rental history, you're the bad guy. And if the landlord loses his building to the bank, tenants are all homeless, anyway.

@LordShadowfire
And if the landlord loses his building to the bank, tenants are all homeless, anyway.
banks are infamous for never selling the homes they repossess at more affordable rates. oh wait im wrong.
Under federal banking regulations, there is a two-year limit on banks maintaining possession of a foreclosed property. The rules stipulate that banks can apply for an annual exemption that can push their ownership of a property to as much as five years.
@NoahB Yes, but said banks almost always evict anyone living in those properties. That is why there are more empty houses than homeless people in the U.S.

@LordShadowfire there are empty houses bc people buy and hold and never sell. the issue isn't people buying homes, moving in, and never selling. its landlords and developers building/buying homes and never selling.
@NoahB Oh, trust me. The whole point of building houses is to rent or sell. Empty houses still incur all kinds of costs until you owe more than they are worth.

@LordShadowfire shall i refer you to the '08 housing crash?
@NoahB No need. I lived through it, and got stuck with a bunch of houses nobody would buy. That's why I rent them.

@LordShadowfire lol uh-huh. sure. thats why lol. you're a real stand up guy taking one on the chin for the community.

@LordShadowfire uh no. i'd rather live in the house i buy instead of making others pay off my lease
NoahB · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire im sure you're a fine landlord. but im sorry the current housing market is inaccesible to alot of people precisely because of people like you who buy up properties, make everyone else pay your lease, and drive up all the living expenses. Not saying you're public enemy number one or anything, obviously there are bigger fish to fry. but I can't and won't feel sorry for you lol. you're just gunna have to deal with the grief if this is how you want to build your wealth.

@LordShadowfire ugh, look if your dad built those house than whatever. i don't really care about your personal nuance of this issue. but buying a slurpee at 7/11 and being able to afford home is not a comparable metaphor. For one when you pay for the slurpee you own it lol
@NoahB I'd be happy to sell you a house. I fully intend to sell all the houses we own, just as soon as that decision is mine. You have no idea of the headache of maintaining them all. It's insane.

But yes, again, you only have a problem with the concept of paying somebody else's bills when you're paying for literally anything else but a house.

I suppose you think rent should be free, you shouldn't have to pay for repair work to the house as it ages, and you shouldn't have to pay utilities. And what is the owner supposed to do? Take out three jobs to pay for what you refuse to touch?
NoahB · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire i do think rent should be free. i'm not saying YOU should personally make your properties free to rent. i don't really care do what you want. But I think there should always be a place a person can live in should they ever become unfortunately homeless. Personally i think the gov should buy up a bunch of the properties developers sit on and leave empty. Theres enough of that to go around.
@NoahB So you want more homeless shelters, and you want those shelters to be of better quality. I agree. But these developers you're complaining about? Homebuilders? They (we) can't afford to sell low. That's why the houses sit empty.

But yeah, I would sell to a housing program to the homeless in a heartbeat.
