Where have all the real Republicans gone?

What ever happened to the GOP, the party that was all about small and sensible Government, lower taxes for the rich, war-mongering, gun-toting Republican? When did they become this white supremacist, low brow, trailer park trash, conspiracy theorist cult? There was a time where you could have a sensible debate with a Republican and while I didn't agree with their politics, you could respect them for their ideals and vision. Now it appears that the Tea Party has taken over the Republican party? But where have all the real Republicans gone? Into hiding?

I hate the current republican party for the reasons you've stated, but let's not dick around and pretend that GOP Classic™ was anything short of terrible. Like you've accurately stated here, the republican party has long supported illegal invasions, torture, war crimes, regime change, and in two specific instances even open genocide. Disagreeing with someone is one thing, but when they advocate for something that is sincerely reprehensible because it causes immense harm and suffering to others, it's an entirely different conversation.

Tbh those kinds have died off. The GOP now absorbed all these small groups, the racists, anti-semites, gun freaks, evangelicals, etc... And turned them into a voting block of fear and hate. And said give us your vote and we will put your ideas first. So they made a deal with the devil for political power.

They went behind closed doors with the Democrats and took a few pages from their playbook. And never forget that politicians on all sides have two goals: 1.stay in power 2. Make as much money as they can legally or on the sly. That’s why IMO this country is like the Roman Empire-abandoned by those in charge and taken over by barbarians.

@soar2newhighs You might well be right, I just find it strange that we don't hear from them anymore, all we hear and see are the hardcore right wing wingnuts that have always been there, they were just mostly ignored by both parties and maybe that was the mistake? Most self respecting Republicans would have never let the Marjorie Taylor-Greene's even make it past the Primaries, let alone to the House!

It seems like both sides have gotten more extreme on the fringes. Most of the people I know are center-left or center-right. The extremism is worrisome.

@uncalled4 I wonder if it's because of the ability to now post their radical opinions openly on web sites like this one that has brought some of this about? I have little to no doubt that the radicals have always existed on both sides but they didn't have open platforms like this and others to get their ideas and their voices out there? In the past "Letters to the Editor" would have been an apt comparison, except the "Editor" had the ability to control what was printed, good or bad. I think that the ability to post openly has somehow empowered them because there is no consequence to what they say?
