Actually i wonder also if part of the problem was COVID, not because of how badly Trump bungled the response to this pandemic but because his strength lay in demagoguery.
He capitalized on the fear and hatred of the other, be that liberals or foreigners but with COVID suddenly becoming the fixating, obvious enemy, he wasn't getting as much support from the people who would have been all out against Mexicans and communists. Suddenly it was all about COVID and he couldn't blame COVID on the other. I mean he sure tried but it just didn't work as well as telling Americans that Mexicans were taking all their jobs.
