If you don't know history, you wouldn't realize that the Republican and Democrats almost completely switched between 1900 and 1985.


So the liberal Republicans of the north, are actually the liberal Democrats of the northeast now.

While the Southern conservative Democrats became the southern conservative Republicans of today.


They basically just switched names. That's only if you actually care about history and reality.


So yes, it was the Republicans... but in reality it you ignore the labels and get to the truth, it was the North East Liberals

@deadgerbil I really think they fail in teaching subjects by using labels like Republicans and Democrats and should be using the ideology.

Such as the US Northeast as been Liberal no matter the label.

The US South has been conservative, no matter the label.

It's extremely simply if you avoid the labels. But labels confuse everyone.

@TheRascallyOne Actually that's not correct. They don't teach that well enough in schools, as stated before the schools teach via the Republicans and Democrats labels and that causes more confusion.

I learned it from my conservative parents which were history majors. After having extremely hard time understanding how America went from the Radical Republicans of Lincoln's era to the Republicans of today, it made no sense how that switch happened.

Literally google and research "Radical Republicans". They were the north east extreme liberals of Lincoln's day which demanded the ended of slavery and truely wanted to screw the South after the Civil war ended. Lincoln being a moderate, and realizing if you hurt the south too much, then they can't rebuild and might continue to hate, tried to punish less. Where the North East is extremely liberal (just like today, but they're Republicans).

Also look up 1968 Democratic National Convention which basically all hate broke out, as the liberals basically officially took over the more moderate Democrat party understanding some arguably underhand tactics. Partly lead by Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, whom some called the boss as he controlled Chicago.


While look South as any point, and they're clearly the conservative group, no matter the label of the party.

The geographical politics did not change, but the party labels did.
