America is not a democracy it’s a representative republic and that’s what many people outside the US and a few in the US don’t understand.

@jackson55 Would you explain?

@jackson55 it's still a representative democracy, hence why there's voting. You're splitting hairs here.

@basilfawlty89 No, it’s why the popular vote doesn’t always win. The electoral college gives states with less population an equal vote. Otherwise California and New York would dominate national politics.

@jackson55 it's a representative democracy, literally by dictionary definition, hence why you have voting where you elect your senators, congress people and the president. The electoral college wasn't set up because they didn't want democracy, it was set up because people didn't have the ability to count the votes back then, so people had electors pledge for them. Hence why the electoral college is an antiquated system that doesn't make sense today.
At the moment you have electors for nearly empty states. That doesn't make any sense. People elect leaders, not empty plots of land.

@basilfawlty89 I f that were true states like Wyoming would have no say at all in national elections.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@jackson55 that's because nearly no one lives in Wyoming. Popular vote is how most countries do it and it works better than the electoral college, which just ensures a two party system.

@basilfawlty89 Like I said before, without the electoral college California and New York would dominate national elections and not everyone likes liberal politics.
