In the UK we dont have it at all. You have to walk two or three blocks to a polling station and once there, it takes two minutes.

It must be deliberate in America to suppress the vote.

@Burnley123 Excellent point - I read an article the other day which mentioned a US county that covered over 1,700 square miles and only had one polling station ☹️

@Burnley123 It is absolutely deliberate. In my area, Republicans in control of local government voted to have five early voting locations to serve more than 500,000 people. I tried to vote early, but the wait was 1-2 hours in freezing rain in the middle of a work day. Wait times were longer in better weather and on weekends. I ended up voting today in my regular polling place, where there were no problems. Urban areas in the US which have significant minority populations often have huge lines with long wait times. Many people work and can't spend 4-6 hours waiting in line to vote, so they leave.

@Milkshake Polling stations are open from 7 am to 10 pm and people who work vote either before or after work - we can also vote by post 🙂

@Dlrannie ut how does that work when you have to wait a long time to vote ? like you plan for 15 minutes and then are stuck there for an hour

@Milkshake My local polling place opened at 6 AM this morning to accommodate people who wanted to vote before work. It is open until 9 PM tonight to accommodate people who want to vote after work.

@windinhishair Glenn Greenwald wrote an article contrasting his now native Brazil with America. Brazil is a poorer country with many problems and a history of right-wing governments. It also, like America, covers a huge land area and is organised into states. It still has an efficient voting system and a high turnout. There is no way that America needs to have voting lines unless it is by design.

@Milkshake It works perfectly well and has done for decades - counting of ballots starts immediately after the polls are closed and results start coming in around 2am In the morning 🙂

@Burnley123 Agreed. Every election cycle I can count on seeing long voting lines in urban places like Houston, Atlanta, Cleveland, etc. It is absolutely by design.

In the UK, it's pretty much every council ward has a voting station and its standard throughout the whole country. In rural areas, you might have to drive but it would be a five-minute drive to the nearest school or community centre. If you vote at a peak time in a general election, you might have five people in front of you and have to wait a couple of minutes. This is the worst-case scenario.
