pedestrianisation

I think all the high streets in the uk being pedestrianised is a dam good idea as is far more safe cycle lanes .
We have become far to reliant on the car to get around , so much so that most kids are taken to school by car no matter how close they live .I have witnessed people driving to work when work is less than a half hour walk to work or shops .We have become lazy and this has caused an explosion in obesity in adults and kids .When I was in my early teens I rode 3 miles to high school and often walked home from junior school with my sister as both my parents worked .Even now as an adult we have taken to walking to the shops about 20 minutes away .Granted I can no longer walk so use a mobility scooter but the family walk and we have a trolley we bought attached to my mobility scooter to carry shopping home .If were doing a large shop then my daughter takes shopping in a taxi and the rest of us walk home as my scooter is to large to fit in a car , we only do this about once a month .
You only need a car for long distance trips where its to far to ride or walk .As for the disabled , if you can afford a car , you can afford a mobility sccooter so no excuse .
Pedestrianisation is not the answer to everything. In my local High Street, we still get elderly people mown down by bicycles in the pedestrianised zones because they are on a steep hill and there are certain individuals who enjoy flying down them at full speed.

I do agree that we need more cycle lanes and provisions to hire and park bicycles - especially given that cycling is touted as a good alternative to public transport during Covid crises.
