It's a complicated situation. The Assad family has been in power in Syria for 52 years. They monopolized power, in the hands of their minority religious sect (Alawite) and took the Christians and Druze under their protection, essentially keeping the bulk of wealth, and creating a majority of uneducated, and incredibly poor Sunni majority.
The latter gave birth to ISIS. ISIS destroyed all the Christian monuments they can get their hands on, and in turn, Assad has been massacring the living crap out of all the Sunnis in Syria, fundamental or not.
We, Americans, under Trump, have no clue what we're doing there, but we support Turkey, whose goal is to destroy the Kurds of Syria.
