About conservatives...

John Stuart Mill in the 1860...

"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives... I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it. Suppose any party, in addition to whatever share it may possess of the ability of the community, has nearly the whole of its stupidity, that party must, by the law of its constitution, be the stupidest party; and I do not see why honorable gentlemen should see that position as at all offensive to them, for it ensures their being always an extremely powerful party . . . There is so much dense, solid force in sheer stupidity, that any body of able men with that force pressing behind them may ensure victory in many a struggle, and many a victory the Conservative party has gained through that power"
These days we simply have left and right wing goggles on, and each group looks 'stupid' to the other.
"The thing the two party system is that each party is worse than the other."

Right out of the play book of Joseph Goebbels. Those who fall for it are rightly called "Useful idiots".

@puck61 Some ass hat was boasting earlier how "compassionate" governor Cuomo is. That is how loony the left is!
@curiosi There are idiots out there that are actually still 'deifying' Cortez as a "strong intelligent woman". It is mind boggling!
@curiosi [c=#BF0000] I apologize for the deleted posts, but I was letting my emotions weaken my rationality. I feel like I need to stop being so hyperbolic with my choices of words. It's not at all constructive or conducive to civil discussion. [/c]

I think Mill IIRC is talking about the British Conservative Party, not those with "conservative" values. And whether or not it was true in 1860 or 1960 or even 2010, it certainly rings true today!
Today’s liberals think any change is good.. and never think of flow on consequences..
They just wanna feel good for 5 minutes.

The most telling part of this may be that incoherency is not a new thing.
@MistyCee ? You find it incoherent?
@SomeMichGuy Yup. I've always found Mill difficult to decipher for some reason.
@MistyCee I grant that J. S. Mill is typically dense, prone to the use of multisyllabic words, and often has tight reasoning, but the above excerpt seems to be one of the easier passages I've read which he wrote.

kind of hard to follow
From what I've heard of 19th century liberals, on the other hand, is that they would be considered staggeringly stupid by the liberals of today

@puck61 well I don't know if I'd go that far. But I think some of what you say might be applicable to 19c liberals. I would apply use the word "hate" for any generation though
