First, no one really gives a fuck what you, I or anyone thinks. So let's be clear there. Don't give yourself that much credit. So maybe you can put the faux-persecution card down.
But here's an awesome quote from a very smart man by the name of Isaac Asimov. I think it sums it all up really well.

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
In other words, say stupid shit and you're going to be called stupid. Pretty basic concept.
