How can republicans claim to be the party of Abraham Lincoln and defend their “confederate heritage” at the same time?

Would today’s Republican Party even support the Civil Right acts of the 60’s? Back than we had Everette Dickson(sp?) and the main leaders that did support it, but now as the party of the white populist backlash I actually doubt it.
