In your opinion, do the harms of patriotism outweigh the benefits?

BlueVeins · 22-25
Everything good that patriotism accomplishes can be done better with altruism.
It depends on someone defines it. For me, patriotism means that I want what I think is best for my country, my government and fellow citizens. It doesn’t mean that I think we’re better than everyone else, or that I close my eyes when we’re in the wrong.

It's an interesting question, but patriotism has so many different connotations that any serious answer would have to be yes, no, and anywhere in between.
That depends on your definition of patriotism.

If you define it as loving your country to the exclusion and detriment of all else, you define it differently than I do.

I love my country, but I am not blind to its faults and I don't think we should always make decisions based only on what is 'best' for us. I have been to other countries and I loved some of them, too, but this, to me, is home.
[c=#359E00] whatever patriotism is, it's stupid, especially to bring that to internet [/c]
I think the problem is nationalism gets conflated with patriotism.

Patriotism is fine. It's jingoism that's harmful.

It is largely the province of small minds. But what can you do, the world is full of joiners 🤷‍♂️

Those people would be into worse shit otherwise, they need this stuff.

It would be nice for people to think of themselves as well belonging to the one group of humans rather than notional groups I think...

If you separate patriotism from nationalism, then no, I think it’s good. But nationalism is a big problem in my country.

Depends on how one defines patriotism
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
Patriotism is a pretty subjective thing.

There is a difference between patriotism and nationalism. Patriotism is wanting the best and respecting the best of your nation. Patriotism is also a willingness to call out the worst of your nation and working to fix it. It does not claim that your nation IS the best, nor does it exclude the excellence capable of other nations.
